Cladophialophora bantiana: a US clinical case series assisted by artificial intelligence

October 14, 2026

Abstract

The MMWR reported on October 2, 2026 that Cladophialophora bantiana identification had increased in recent years at one reference laboratory and that more data were needed to identify risk factors. This analysis of a 4.95M patient electronic health record using the Meta Muse AI platform identified 21 patients with confirmed or probable C. bantiana identified in brain (7) or lung (14) samples. Among the seven brain infection patients, only two died. Artificial intelligence can greatly increase the speed of the analysis of large datasets and make these analyses accessible to more researchers.
