Social Connections Survey
This survey provides an in-depth look at the extent to which people feel connected, socially supported and lonely in different parts of the world. The data sheds new light on the characteristics of people’s social connections, the ways people interact with others, the groups with whom they have frequent contact, and how they use their connections to seek support when they need it. The 2022-2023 survey includes respondents from nearly 150 countries and a report with main findings can be found below.

Key Features
Nationally representative
Utilizing face-to-face or telephone interviews, all samples were probability-based and representative of the national adult (15+) population within each country.Connectedness insights
By asking individuals about how, when and with whom people interact, we can learn about the type of support people get from their connections and what factors are related to feelings of connectedness including social support and loneliness.Global
Fielding for this global survey study took place as part of Gallup’s annual World Poll survey administration. Surveys were administered from June 2022 through February 2023, with approximately 1,000 participants per country over the age of 15 interviewed in 142 countries.Methodology
Step 1: Design questionnaire
Meta and Gallup designed the survey instrument based on literature reviews, critical inputs from cognitive interviews with participants in each country and in consultation with experts specialized in social connections research.Step 2: Interview respondents in each target country
Gallup interviewed approximately 1000 people aged 15 or older in each country between from June 2022 through February 2023. Data collection happened over the phone in countries where phone penetration is high (approximately >80% of the population) and face-to-face otherwise.Step 3: Conduct post-survey weighting
The data within each country was weighted to minimize bias and project the sample data to its corresponding target population, and all analyses take into account the design effect introduced by the complex sampling designs.Step 4: Analyze and publish data
A report of main findings was written collaboratively with Gallup. Meta aggregated survey responses at a national level and then published the data publicly on Humanitarian Data Exchange. De-identified microdata is also made available to eligible nonprofits and universities.RESOURCES
