Cross-Gender Social Ties Around the World
Key Features
Global reach
The cross-gender ties dataset is built using information on social ties from active Facebook users between the ages of 18 and 65 in nearly 200 countries and territories. For each friendship, we observe self-reported gender based on information shared on peoples’ profiles and construct a measure of tie strength that we use to rank each individual’s friendships from strongest to weakest.Regional insights
Leveraging the networks of over 1.8 billion people, we can produce measures of sub-national variation in the gender composition of networks.Publicly available
The cross gender ties dataset is publicly available and can be downloaded from Humanitarian Data Exchange.Methodology
Step 1: Categorize active Facebook users
We study active Facebook users between 18 and 65 years old including their predicted home location, self-reported gender, and friendships to other users.Step 2: Measure social tie strength
For each friendship, we observe a measure of tie strength based on a proprietary model that we use to rank each individual’s friendships from strongest to weakest.Step 3: Define Cross-Gender Friending Ratio
We construct measures of cross-gender social ties by location by creating a Cross-Gender Friending Ratio (CGFR). In places where men and women form equal shares of their ties with women, the value of the Cross-Gender Friending Ratio is one, with values of this ratio less than one indicating the presence of social networks that are segregated by gender.RESOURCES
